For a while, the Government PU College grounds at H D Kote town was resonating with patriotic feelings as people, who had gathered there to pay their tributes to Sepoy P N Mahesh, raised slogans like Vandemataram... Bharat Matha Ki Jai...

While students, with candlelights in their hands, took turns to pay their respects to the martyred soldier, another group of students with tricolours in hands, raised slogans in favour of the country, as a mark of respect to the braveheart soldier.Mahesh was one among the 10 soldiers who lost their lives in an avalanche at Siachen glacier on February 3.

No sooner the ambulance carrying the mortal remains of Mahesh arrived at the town at 10.10 am, people, who had gathered alongside the main road, stood still for a while to catch a glimpse of the box carrying the remains of the soldier.

Heartrending scenes were witnessed at the grounds, as the near and dear ones of Mahesh, recalled the latter in a grief-stricken tone. Some among them prayed for his ‘rebirth’, saying (Kannada) ‘Mahesha Mathhomme Hutti Baa...’

The teaching faculty at the college, gave a profile of Mahesh to the visiting students, that indeed enriched respect towards the soldier among the wards.

Satish, one of Mahesh’s friends, was recording every bit of the last moments of his deceased friend on his cellphone.

He reasoned, whenever I remember him, this video record will sooth my mind. After keeping the body for viewing close to two-hours, it was taken to his native Pashupati village in K R Nagar taluk, Mysuru district.
