Former Delhi University professor S A R Geelani has been arrested in a case registered over an event organised at central Delhi’s Press Club of India in which slogans were shouted hailing 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.

He was detained from his house late on Monday for questioning and was arrested on Tuesday.

Geelani was produced before Metropolitan Magistrate Harvinder Singh and sent to two-day police custody. The police told the court that they wanted custodial interrogation to identify others involved in raising anti-India slogans.

“Police investigation is integral part of investigation and the accused has said that he can identify those who raised anti-India slogans. Since he was the convener of the meeting, therefore, the case of grant of police custody is made out,” the court said.
The event was organised on February 10 in which banners were placed showing Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhat as martyrs. Geelani had booked the club’s conference hall through Delhi University professor Ali Javed.

Javed used his credit card to make the payment and another person named Mudassar was also involved.
