“Deshakkagi prana theththa sainikane, ninagido nanna salam... e deshavannu kaayalu maththomme hutti baa...” (My salutes to you soldier who sacrificed your life for the country... Come back again to guard the country).

This is how sepoy Mahesh’s mother Sarvamangala reacted when the mortal remains of her son were kept for viewing at the Government guesthouse. Wiping tears, she said, “When he was born, I did not even have an inkling that he will be a martyr one day. Now that he has died for the country, I am proud to be his mother.”

She later urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to take measures to set up a memorial for her son at H D Kote by naming a circle after him, besides installing his statue.

Compensation cheque
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah handed over a cheque for Rs 25 lakh as compensation to the soldier’s mother Sarvamangala.

He also promised to take a suitable decision on her request for setting up his (Mahesh) memorial, besides sanctioning a site, a government job for the next of the kin of the deceased and also four acres of land, as per the benefits extended by the government in such cases.
