Strong quake strikes off Indonesia

The quake struck at 6:51 am (0221 IST) at a depth of 128 kilometres and 295 kilometres west of the Tanimbar Islands and 383 kilometres east of Dili, East Timor, the US Geological Survey said.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity. A 7.6-magnitude quake that struck Sumatra island in September killed more than 1,000 people.
