SDM national meet to focus on educational psychology

Time to contribute to field, says professor

Mysuru-based Regional Institute of Education Professor C G Venkatesh Murthy said the present Educational Psychology originated from philosophy and it dates back to the days of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle. 

Addressing a gathering after inaugurating a three-day national-level conference on “Psychology: Existing Trends and Emerging Fields” and speaking on  ‘Perspectives in Educational Psychology for the 21st Century’ organised by the Department of Postgraduate Studies and Research in Psychology of Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheswara College (Autonomous) in Ujire on Thursday, he said Educational Psychology will no more remain a subject in Psychology or Education which has limited role to play. “So far, we have benefitted from this field, it is right time to start contributing to this field,” he observed. 

There are many issues and concerns in Educational Psychology which are of extreme importance to all teachers. Bullying, handling, internalising and externalising disorders among children, school violence, student drop outs, understanding and handling ‘at risk learners’, learning disabilities, including dyslexia, dyscalculia and dysgraphia, inclusive education and autism disorder spectrum  are the tall areas in educational psychology  needs to be addressed by the teachers properly,he said.  

In his presidential address, SDM Educational Society Secretary Dr B Yashoverma said the presence of psychologist is inevitable in all fields. It may be school, educational set up, industrial system, family system and professional areas, in nutshell the psychologist requires to be omnipresent, he felt.  

Psychology Professor (Retd) and Head of Educafe Student Solutions Pvt Ltd (Bengaluru) Dr Sudha Bhogle spoke on “Psychology: Existing Trends and Emerging Fields”.   

Lecturers and students from different colleges presented papers.

SDM Postgraduate Studies in Psychology Department Head Dr M Y Manjula was present on the occasion.
