A man killed his wife by slitting her throat and later attempted suicide by slashing his own throat at his house at Hegdenagar in Sampigehalli police limits on Wednesday night. Narayan Swamy, 27, suffered injuries, while his wife Mamatha, 22, died on the spot. Swamy, who is undergoing treatment at Victoria Hospital, is critical, police said.

A domestic dispute led to the incident, police said.

Mamatha, who hailed from Shidlaghatta in Chikkaballapur district, was married to Swamy about three-and-a-half-years ago. The couple have a one-and-a- half-year-old infant. The couple quarrelled frequently as Swamy started suspecting Mamatha’s fidelity. At around 11 pm on Wednesday, during an argument, Swamy slit Mamatha’s throat and slashed his throat and fell near her body. Swamy’s brother Ravi, who lives in next door, woke up on hearing the baby’s cries and knocked on the door. When he got no response after repeated knocks, he broke open the door and saw Swamy and Mamatha lying on the floor, police said. Ravi rushed the two to a nearby hospital where doctors declared Mamatha dead on arrival, police said.

The victim’s parents alleged that Swamy often harassed her and elders’ attempt to solve the couple’s disputes had failed, police said.
