Residents vow to make Ganesh Mandir ward plastic-free

In a bid to make Ganesh Mandir ward (165) in Padmanabhanagar Assembly constituency a plastic-free zone, an awareness rally was held on Saturday.

The rally organised by several organisations, in association with the BBMP, saw people turn up in large numbers.

Celebrities from different walks of life including former India cricketer Anil Kumble, singer Shivamogga Subbamma, veteran actor Shivaram, Prajwal Devraj among others took part in the rally.

Students from BNM Engineering College and High School, Pratibha College, Aurobindu College and workers from Sri Kalki Bhagwan Society turned up for the rally.

The schoolchildren distributed pamphlets, containing information on ill-effects of the plastic bags and materials, to the traders and urged them to refrain from using plastics.

Mayor B N Manjunatha Reddy, who flagged off the event, said that such awareness programmes should be conducted in all the 198 wards of the City on a regular basis. “Only then Bengaluru will be plastic free. We are taking steps to ban plastics in a phased manner,” he added.

Veteran actor S Shivaram said that the awareness campaign should not end today or tomorrow but must continue until the plastic usage is stopped completely by citizens.
