After news of Surej village panchayat in Mehsana district of North Gujarat imposing a ban on minor girls using or owning mobile phones went viral on traditional and social media, it appears to have unnerved the architects of the diktat.
Within days of the diktat to disallow girls below 18 years of age from using mobile phones, stating that the gadget distracted them from studies, exposed them to social evils and made them vulnerable to harassment, the village leaders have now disowned their decision.
“The panchayat has nothing to do with the ban; neither have we banned anything nor levied any fine. The media has misquoted us,” a letter signed by various officials of Bechraji taluka, stated.
