Rajiv killer gets 12-hr parole for father's rites

Nalini Sriharan, a life convict in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, on Wednesday attended the final rites of her father P Sankaranarayanan, a retired police officer.

After obtaining 12-hour parole, Nalini, lodged in the Vellore central prison, was brought to her brother’s house in a police vehicle.

She also met several political party leaders including VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan and utilised the occasion to demand her release and that of the six other accused in the case.
This is the second time that Nalini is coming out on parole after she was arrested in 1991. The first time was for her brother’s marriage in 2004.

Though, Nalini's father died in Tirunelveli, his body was brought to Chennai so that her daughter could attend the funeral. Nalini, married to Murugan, was sentenced to death in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. Her sentence was later commuted to life after AICC president Sonia Gandhi pleaded for clemency for the sake of the convict’s daughter.
