Deal with both elephants and tigers: Villagers to forest dept

Demand compensation for crop, cattle loss

The residents of Shanthalli staged a protest outside the office of the Forest Department on Monday, demanding a solution to the elephant and tiger menace near the village.

People from Garvale, Bettadahalli, Haraga, Shanthalli, Kikkaralli, Mankya, Soorlabbi, Heggadamane, Kundalli, Kumaralli, Mallalli and other villages complained of an increase in tiger menace in the last two years. “The tigers have killed domestic animals. The elephant menace is also on the rise in the region and farmers are losing crops as elephants go on the rampage,” explained the residents.

Garvale Gram Panchayat President Palangappa said that in spite of appealing to the Forest Department to check the elephant and tiger menace, no action has been initiated so far. The movements of tigers and elephants in the villages have created fear in the minds of residents, they added.

Former MLC S G Medappa said that the tigers should be caught and shifted to the forests. The compensation for the loss of cows should be paid within 20 days, he demanded.

Krishika Samaja President Takeri Ponnappa said that the elephants have been camping at Haraga, Kundalli, and Shanthalli villages and that suitable compensation should be paid for the loss of crops.
