For a jugaadu tadka of creativity

A quirky bicycle on the wall, number plates on the side-walls and screw drivers on the tables, together sum up the creativity that The Jugaad Cafe and Bar comprises.

Synonymous to the everyday lingo of youth, the word jugaad stands for making the best use of whatever minimum we have; and the dishes, the ambience and the interiors of the restaurant go very well with the theme.

Spread over approx 3,000 sq feet with a seating capacity of around 90 people, the restaurant is divided into three floors with a bar on the third floor and dining space on the first and the second floors.

The very first jugaad of the place begins with the menu, which is designed like a writing pad on a brown exam board. Following which they have a special jugaad menu, with innovative dishes prepared with regular ingredients.

The name standing out in the list, Todu Macroni Cheese Burger was Metrolife’s first pick. With buns made of macroni and cheese and chicken patty in the middle, served with mashed potatoes, was definitely a rare sight. Though the boiled macroni made the buns rigid in texture and soggy, the dish overall seemed a pretty innovative jugaad to a regular chicken burger.

Baba ki Potli was the second name on the jugaad list that caught our attention. Fried mutton dumpling served with Indian tamarind sauce read the explanation and the tamarind sauce was what we were excited about. Mutton dumplings or what could also be considered close to fried mutton momos worked wonders with imli chutney, a favourite sider of many.

Jugaad Dhamaka

Sandwhich and Sushi Paneer were our final call from the jugaad menu. The former was a regular chicken club sandwich with some additions of spices and ingredients for the ‘different’ factor in the dish. Sushi Paneer, served with the same imli chutney, was an interesting Japanese twist to a regular paneer snack, but could have tasted better with more flavours and spices.

The cafe and bar also serves some refreshing mocktails, most of which could be rarely found in other cafes and restaurants in the market. The Watermelon Mint Cooler has rich flavour of watermelon and is an ideal drink for the upcoming heat. We also tried Imli Splash, a delightful khatti-meethi drink for summer.

We were then served with Prawn Poori, another innovative fusion of regular Indian food with sea food. Like a poori bhaji, the dish was served with cooked prawns over small pooris. An exciting concoction, indeed!

Browsing through the exam sheets of the menu, what caught our attention next was Beer Batter Fish Finger. Though soft in texture and perfectly cooked, the flavours of the dish (tasteless) weren’t something what we had expected.

Our meal was summed with some innovative desserts — a highlight of the evening. Parle Ji Ka Jugaad, a dish that shines bright on the top of the list, is the best that one can do with Parle G biscuits. The traditional pateesa in between two Parle G biscuits, rabri and Cadbury gems, all ‘jugaadofied’ in the restaurant’s style, can be a good try. We also tried Litchi Tehri Shots which was a pleasant blend of litchi with cold rabri.
All in all, head to this place if you’re looking for a ‘jugaadu tadka’ of creativity in your
otherwise monotonous food.
