Boodihal seer laid to rest in DM Kurke

Hordes of devotees pay their last respects to the pontiff

 Boodihal Viraktha mutt seer Rajashekara Swami, who was killed in a car crash on Wednesday morning, was laid to rest as per the mutt’s tradition in the presence of seers of various mutts and devotees in D M Kurke village on Thursday afternoon.

As soon as the news of his death spread, seers, politicians, writers, dignitaries and hordes of devotees paid their last respects to the departed soul. All preparations for the last rites and funeral were made on the mutt’s premises near the graves of senior pontiffs Siddabasava Shivayogi and Shanthaveera Swami.

The funeral was performed amid chanting of hymns as per tradition at 11.45 am. More than 50 seers, including Shadakshari mutt’s Rudramuni, Nonavinakere Kadu Siddeshwara mutt’s Karivrushaba Deshikendra Shivacharya, Yala Nodu Mooru Kalasa mutt Jnanaprabhu Siddramadeshikendra and others attended the funeral.

Earlier, the mortal remains of the seer was taken out on a procession in the main streets of the village, placed in a tractor accompanied by hundreds of devotees.

Rajashekhara Swami took charge of the Boodihal Viraktha Mutt in the year 1994, after senior seer Shanthaveera. He was the son of Marulaiah and Jayamma couple.

Schools and colleges had declared holiday and shopkeepers had voluntarily downed the shutters as a mark of respect.
