'Mathsyamela-2016' in Mangaluru from today

 Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University, Bidar, will organise a national-level fish fest, ‘Mathsyamela-2016’, at TMA Pai International Convention Centre here on March 4 and 5.

Addressing mediapersons here on Wednesday, Fisheries College (Mangaluru) Dean and Chairman  Dr K M Shankar said the programme will be organised in collaboration with Department of Fisheries, Government of Karnataka, National Fisheries Development Board, Hyderabad and Karnataka Fisheries Development Corporation, Mangaluru.

Youth Empowerment, Sports and Fisheries Minister Abhayachandra Jain will inaugurate the programme at 10 am. Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim, Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer P I Srividya, Mayor Jacinta Vijaya Alfred, University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences, Shivamogga, Vice-Chancellor Dr C Vasudevappa,  Karnataka Fisheries Development Corporation (KFDC), Mangaluru, Chairman Hiryanna and Managing Director V K Shetty will be the chief guests.

He said the festival is being conducted to create awareness on Indian fisheries sector by providing a single point access to knowledge on support services of various development departments, latest developments of fisheries and aquaculture industry and business opportunities in fisheries sector.

Shankar said India is a major maritime state and an important aquaculture country in the world. India stands seventh in the world with regard to total fish production, with an annual production of about 10 million tonne with the marine and the inland sectors contributing 6.54 and 3.44 million tonne respectively.

Highlights

Fisheries academic institution stalls, fisheries industry stalls, food courts, nature aquarium and sea shells exhibition, fresh fish and ornamental fish exhibition-cum-sale, Western ghat ornamental fishes exhibition, recipe competitions on March 4 and 6, free consultancy to fisheries and aquaculture business and national workshop, as a parallel program for fisheries professionals, and an angling competition on March 6 in Pilikula at 9 am will be the highlights of the fest, he said.

Valedictory programme will be conducted at 4 pm on March 6.
Sericulture, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services Minister A Manju will deliver the valedictory address, District In-charge Minister B Ramanatha Rai, Health and Family Welfare Minister U T Khader, Sports, Youth Empowerment and Fisheries Minister K Abhayachandra Jain will participate. MLA J R Lobo will preside over the programme.
Mathsyamela organising secretary Dr Shivakumar Magada and Dr Basavaraj were present.
