The long and short of it

If summer comes, can skirts be far behind? Floral, printed or striped, they not only make heads turn but beat the heat as well. And it has became a staple in any young person’s wardrobe.

Fashion enthusiasts are never tired of adding a few more in the collection. They have always been a instant symbol of chicness and style and is a timeless trend.
Many designers feel that skirts do their rounds every year but they have never been the same.

Rimi Nayak, a designer says, “Skirts are very much in trend as people have again started wearing them. They are wearing it with crop tops and shirts. The most trending look of a skirt is the one with prints and teaming it up with crop tops or even kurtas.”

She adds, “Earlier, skirts were more fitted and structured but now, there are different kinds of silhouettes when it comes to crepes and cuts. Long skirts are in vogue too. They are a good option for Indian body type. People have the freedom to wear it as both Western and Indian wear, so it has become more like a fusion wear. Adding a ‘dupatta’ or a stole can give a different twist to the entire look of the outfit. It is not necessary for an individual to  be tall to sport a long skirt.”

“One can always wear a pair of boots and it will instantly give a dash of style. On the other hand, denim skirts are also seen trending this season. I believe that skirts are a comfortable outfit and that is why they are not just specified as a summer wear,” she adds.

She however, feels that depending on the print of the skirt, a person can decide either to go minimal with the accessories or overdo it.

From mini, midi and knee length to ankle length and maxi, this attire has gone through transformation over the years, but has never been out of fashion.

Designer Ritika Arya Jain says, “Skirts are very much ‘in’ right now, not just the short ones but also the long skirts. They are doing absolutely well. It adds height to a woman’s stature. Even women who are short can wear a really nice skirt and get away with it.”

According to her, skirts are chic and have an alluring look. Moreover, she says that since the summer has set in, flowy, light-weight skirts are garnering a lot of attention from fashionistas. Her latest collection of skirts are more about see-through fabrics like chiffons and laces in different cuts and floral patterns.

“We are doing a lot of cut work at present. Skirts that are really long are lined very short, so the legs can be seen through the cut work. These are some patterns we are looking into. Apart from this, we are creating high-slit skirts that show one leg right from the mid-thigh to the ankle, and skirts that are attached to the tops. They look more like a one-piece dress but are separate. These styles are really doing well, they are revealing and yet concealing and of course, trending.”

The various occasions an individual can sport a skirt, she says, are, “It definitely counts as a daily casuals, they are comfortable and have replaced palazzos at the moment. One can also sport a skirt for a day event like ‘mehendi’ function — wear a corset or a crop top and
they are good to go. From classic coral to huge range of blues are the most trending colours.”
