Two drunk traffic policemen were manhandled by a group of people after the duo rammed a container truck, which they had seized, into two cars near Agara on Sarjapur Road on Wednesday night.

The irate public manhandled Eshwar Charanthimath, assistant sub-inspector (ASI) and Mahaveer P, constable, both attached to the HSR Layout traffic police station. They also threw stones at the truck.

The two policemen were on their way home after work on a motorcycle. They stopped by a bar and restaurant and consumed liquor.

They resumed their journey and noticed that the driver of a container lorry - identified as Manohar - was driving in a rash and negligent manner. They tried to stop the lorry, but Manohar drove on.

They chased the lorry and waylaid it.  They found the driver in an inebriated state. The policemen asked him to take the vehicle to the police station. But he did not oblige. The ASI and constable decided to drive the lorry to the police station themselves.

Mahaveer sat at the wheel.    But he lost control of the lorry and it rammed into two cars moving on the road, before coming to a halt.

The public gathered at the spot and started throwing stones at the lorry. They also manhandled the policemen. The Madiwala police rushed to the spot. The policemen were sent to the Madiwala traffic police station and it was found that they were driving under the influence of alcohol. Based on the complaint filed by the car owners, the policemen were arrested.

A case has been registered at the Madiwala (law and order) police station against those who threw stones at the lorry and manhandled the police personnel.  The ASI and constable were suspended and a detailed enquiry had been ordered against them, police said.
