'Artistes need to question'

Often referred as the ‘princess of parallel cinema’ for her choice of roles, actor Tannishtha Chatterjee is always mindful of choosing scripts that have strong women characters. “Women in entertainment need to assert themselves. It is extremely important to break clichés. There are a lot of issues related to women’s suppression and as actors, it is upon us to change it. Artistes need to question,” Chatterjee says. The actor recently spoke to Metrolife at the screening of Ananth Mahadevan’s film ‘Rough Book’, based on the Indian education system.

Chatterjee plays the role of a physics teacher in the film, who emphasises on learning the basics through application. According to her, teaching is not a regular profession. Teaching is an important part of society that makes other professions possible.

There are many teachers who try and make a subject interesting for their students through application like my character in the film. But there are a lot of others who need to question their ways,” says Chatterjee, who is best known for her performance in the film adaptation of Monica Ali’s bestseller ‘Brick Lane’ (2007).

With Indian actors recently bagging Hollywood projects including Priyanka Chopra and Nimrat Kaur, Chatterjee who made her international debut in 2005 says that it is a “healthy trend”.

The actor, who’s performance in the German film ‘Shadows of Time’ won her critical acclaim, says, “We, as artistes, don’t believe in boundaries. We believe in multicultural exchange. It is fantastic that Indian actors are being recognised for their work abroad. Though I started quite early, I am quite happy to see more and more actors (in Hollywood),”  She adds, “It makes the cultural life back home in India quite exciting and vibrant because there are more people travelling. Exchange of ideas take place which give the actors (Indian and Hollywood) a chance to be at the same platform.”
