Duan too strong for Shlomo in title clash

Duan pocketed $1,568 and 12 WTA points for the title win and Shlomo received $980 and eight WTA points, on a day when the temparatures dipped somewhat and there was cloud cover to make on-court conditions comfortable.

Shlomo finished on the losing side for the second day running as she and her Australian partner Kristina Pejkovic had lost to Rushmi Chakravarthi and Chun-Yan He in the doubles final on Friday. The 21-year-old Israeli, who has been sparring with former India player Manisha Malhotra during her stay here, was error-prone and struggled with her serve, especially the first.

Her Chinese opponent’s deep groundstrokes and sharp returns only compounded Shlomo’s worries.

The big-serving 19-year-old Duan jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first set before being broken in the fifth game. However, she did not face much trouble in holding her serve thereafter and comfortably closed out the set in the ninth game. The Chinese girl then broke Shlomo twice in the second set.
