Palike to buy 200 compactors to collect, transport waste

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will buy another 200 compactors next year for collection and transport of garbage, the civic agency’s commissioner G Kumar Naik has said.

He was speaking to reporters after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah inducted 25 highly mechanised compactors into the BBMP’s fleet at a simple ceremony on Wednesday. The BBMP procured the compactors for Rs 8.88 crore and will pay an additional Rs 1.92 crore to the supplier firm for their maintenance over five years. The total expenditure on these compactors will be Rs 9.62 crore.

Naik said the Palike had taken several steps to address the garbage problem and buying the compactors was one of them. The compactors arrest the foul smell of garbage as well as the leachates while transporting them to the processing units. The unique feature of solid waste management in Bengaluru is that the BBMP is going for scientific disposal and has cut its dependence on landfills.

“We have minimised our dependence on landfills to a great extent. We have seven waste treatment plants across the City, which are primarily wet waste-processing units producing compost. The dry waste is baled and sent to industries as fuel for their furnaces,” the commissioner said. Almost 2,200 tonnes of waste goes to the seven processing units, according to a source in the Palike.
