Crack down on PU 'tuition mafia', says Cong leader

Senior Congress leader K R Ramesh Kumar on Tuesday urged Home Minister G Parameshwara to order a crackdown on the pre-university “tuition mafia” in the interest of students.

Participating in a discussion on the budget in the Assembly, he said several coaching centres were charging students lakhs of rupees for tuitions.

“Parents tend to spend everything for their children, thinking it’s the turning point in their lives. The tuition mafia is also responsible for question paper leaks. The government should not succumb to pressure” he said.

Kumar said there was a need for comprehensive reforms in administration. “There are multiple organisations and officials for any work. For instance, construction of roads comes under the Pradan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, the PWD, Karnataka State Highway Improvement Project, Karnataka Road Development Corporation and more. We end up spending more on the organisations than on construction of roads,” he said.

He said the budget should be prepared by understanding the grievances and problems faced by the people and not by keeping accounts.
