Sonia reminds Assam of 'black days' of AGP regime

Even as the BJP tries hard to set a mood of change for the first phase of Assembly polls in Assam, the Congress on Wednesday unleashed its top gun—party president Sonia Gandhi who attended a couple of public rallies in the state.

The Congress president warned the voters to be aware since the unity and integrity of the state is under threat as the BJP and the AGP have joined hands.

Describing the opposition alliance as union of two evil forces, Sonia urged upon people to vote for the Congress for the fourth straight term.

“The Congress government has worked very hard in the past 15 years to bring back peace and prosperity to Assam. However, the unity and integrity of the state is at stake now after two evil forces have joined hands in this election. The same situation will be repeated if these two evil forces come to power in Assam once again. The state was known only for insurgency and bad fiscal health earlier,” Gandhi said in a public rally at Amguri in Sibasagar district of Assam.

Gandhi also repeated the same apprehension in Biswanath Chariali in Sonitpur district in Assam. Aiming to retain the tea tribe vote bank in Assam, Sonia said the Centre has not done anything for the Assam tea industry.

“The country wakes up with Assam tea. The prime minister often appreciates Assam tea and says that he used to sell Assam tea. However, he is now aware about the pathetic condition of the tea garden workers in Assam. The tea garden workers in Assam are still wondering as to when the ‘aachche din’ (good days) will come in their lives. The government cancelled the special category status for Assam and the prime minister also tried to snatch away the subsidized ration of the tea garden workers in Assam,” Gandhi further added.
