Go back to your childhood or your days in college, and you would remember at least one prank that you have pulled on your friend on 1 April. With another All Fools’ Day here, comedians and standup artistes in the City share some of the funny moments of their lives, and how they took someone for a ride ‘Jumping surprises’ from a box is all too familiar to the world. Praveen Kumar, a comic artiste, remembers how he sent a cousin a rubber snake.

“We were all gathered at her place. She was very scared of reptiles and insects, and we knew this would be a great prank. We had tightly wound the rubber snake into a small box, and put these into several boxes and gift wrapped it. She opened each box excitedly and when she opened the last box, the snake sprung out of it and she squealed,” says Praveen. He says that he loves sharing this story with everyone.

Another young comic artiste, Punya Arora, says that a prank she played as a kid, makes her crack up even now. “Once I called the local icecream store and in the name of our neighbours, ordered who needed an urgent delivery of 8 bars of icecream. They brought the delivery and the neighbours had to pay for them!” she says. Punya recollects how she got caught later, when they had a large get-together at home and the neighbours narrated the story. “I couldn’t stop giggling and my mother instantly knew I was involved,” she says.

Naveen Richard, a standup comedian, vouches that he was a prankster as a youngster. “Since I started performing, I don’t feel the need to pull a prank on someone,” says Naveen. He says that he remembers a time at school when he called a friend and told him that he had failed in his Hindi examinations. “I faked the voice of someone from the school. I could hear my friend bawling and his sister making fun of him in the background,” he says. Naveen let his friend believe the story for a day or two before he spilled the beans.

There are also instances when jokes have backfired and Sumukhi Suresh, a young comedian, laughs and recollects an incident which happened a couple of years back. “It had been a while since I had pulled a April Fools’ Day prank. I called my mother and told her how I had met my ‘prince charming’ and that he was from another religion. My mother flipped and she immediately booked flight tickets and asked me to reach home as soon as possible. Despite repeated attempts to calm her down and tell her that it was 1 April and I was joking, she wouldn’t listen,” says Sumukhi. She adds that when her mother finally realised that it was a joke, she chided Sumukhi. “I will always remember this,” she adds.
