Those who were in tune with international pop and reggae scene in early 2000 would remember popular song Dance With You.

It was the debut single by the Rishi Rich Project whose members were Juggy D, Rishi Rich and Jay Sean who also made his singing debut.

Sean left a deep insignia on the global musical scene by belting out popular numbers like Eyes On You, Ride It and Down.

The 37-year-old is back with his latest single Make My Love Go featuring Sean Paul and says that it is a departure from his previous songs as he has tried to make it organic.

Unlike his contemporaries, Sean, who was born Kamaljit Singh Jhooti in Harlesden, London, has cautiously treaded his musical sojourn. He has focussed on delivering quality music and has taken his own sweet time to come out with an album.

This reflects clearly on his resume as in his over a decade journey, he has produced only four albums.

“I believe in giving quality music. And after receiving so much love from listeners and becoming the first Indian in the world of English music scene to make a mark, I realised that I couldn’t give mediocre stuff to music lovers. So I deliberately started taking out time to produce music.”

But looking the way music scene has changed globally, he is now focusing on bringing out singles to connect with younger generation that have a plethora of options to choose from.

“The new generation of kids love content. If Jay Sean is not giving them music, someone else will. So it is important to adapt and change. At the same time, one has to be careful about what we are putting out in the market... only great products will survive,” he says. “This is why I take out time to craft something different,” he adds.

He regularly performs in India at concerts and weddings, and feels that Indian music scene is eclectic and there is room for every kind of voice. “There are people who love Adnan Sami and then there are people who love Honey Singh.”

He asserts that his music is for people and to stay relevant in the business he does interact with his fans on microblogging site Twitter.

“What makes you relevant in today’s time is who are you being followed by and how much you are being talked about. I am very selective about what I post on it because I want to be known for my music and not private life.”

Sean also feels that this is the right time for him be in Bollywood because “modern films have modern music”.

“Now is the time for me to be in Bollywood because you get to hear different kind of voices in films as they are experimenting and incorporating various methods to bring in  freshness,” he says.
