A 35-year-old property dealer was shot dead outside his house in north Delhi’s Ballimaran late on Thursday. Faheem Ahmed had sustained four gunshot wounds,  the police said.

He succumbed to the injuries while being treated at Lok Nayak Hospital in the wee hours of Friday.

Police suspect Ahmed’s business rivalry with local builders could be the motive behind the attack. Initial probe has pointed the needle of suspicion towards builder mafias.

Ahmed’s family members have told police he was involved in a property dispute over a plot in north east Delhi’s Welcome. Police are investigating the allegations and have contacted the people involved.

Investigators are also looking into an extortion angle, as they have received several complaints regarding extortion calls by local criminals in the recent past.

Police are trying to find out if Ahmed had received any extortion call.  The attack occurred at 11.15 pm when Ahmed went for a walk after dinner near Punjabi Fatak.Ahmed’s neighbour, Mohammad Ilyas, who is an eyewitness, told police that he was sitting on his scooter when an unidentified man — aged between 30-32 years — arrived there.

“The man caught Ahmed’s collar and dragged him to the middle of the road. In the meantime, three more men joined the unidentified man. They all whipped out their pistols and opened fire at Ahmed,” said a police officer.

Ahmed collapsed on the road after which the attackers fled on foot. Hearing gunshots in the neighbourhood, locals gathered there. Ahmed’s family rushed him to hospital.A case of murder under the Indian Penal Code and Arms Act has been registered with Lahori Gate police station.

“We are preparing sketches of the suspects with the help of their physical description details described by Ilyas and a few more witnesses,” said Madhur Verma, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North).  The CCTV footage of the locality are also being scanned for clues. Some local criminals have been grilled. No arrests have been made so far.
