Temporary venue sought for Kannada institute in B'luru

The Union Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) has sought temporary accommodation from the state government to house the Centre of Excellence for Studies in Classical Kannada (CESCK) in Bengaluru till the institute gets a permanent location.

The CESCK, which is functioning on the premises of the Central Institute of Indian Languages in Mysuru, has agreed to shift to Bengaluru as desired by the state government. Though the state government had allotted 3 acres of land on the campus of the Bengaluru University for the institution, constructing a permanent building for the institute would take time. Till the new building is constructed, the state government should provide temporary accommodation for the institute in Bengaluru, the ministry has requested.

Though the CESCK had agreed to shift its location to Bengaluru long ago, there was a delay as it could not get a temporary location in the city, an official from the MHRD told Deccan Herald.

The CESCK was set up in Mysuru with a plan to translate classical Kannada texts into other Indian languages, English and select European languages. Following this, the MHRD set up the planning-cum-monitoring board of CESCK at CIIL.

The functions of the board are identifying research areas, helping CESCK find qualified researchers through a transparent process and monitoring the progress of research and financial aspects, besides submitting quarterly reports to the director of CIIL.

The board is in the process of appointing five senior and 10 associate fellows for these activities.
