Close shave for selfie-obsessed couple as train hits jeep

Duo had stopped vehicle on tracks to click pictures

A couple had a narrow escape when a train rammed into their vintage jeep which they had stopped on the tracks to take a selfie. The incident occurred at a level crossing near Basavanapura in Ramanagaram district on Saturday morning.

According to police, Sandeep, a manager at a private company in Koramanagala, and his wife Pratibha narrowly escaped being hit by Bengaluru-bound Mangala Express. The couple are residents of Aditya Layout in Kothanur.

On Saturday, around 7.30 am, the couple went to Ramanagaram in their vintage jeep.  They stopped their vehicle on the track near Basavanapura level crossing to click pictures. As they were busy clicking pictures and taking a selfie, they noticed a train approaching. They tried to start the vehicle in vain. They, however, managed to jump out of the jeep in time. The train hit the jeep which was dragged for 500 metres, before it came to a halt. Noticing this, the couple fled the spot leaving behind the vehicle, added the police.

The public informed the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the local police about the incident.

The driver of the train informed the police, that he noticed the jeep on the track about a couple of kilometres away and started honking. But the duo were busy clicking pictures.

As the train came closer, they decided to move the vehicle. They jumped out of the vehicle in the nick of time.

 The driver managed to apply the brakes but it stopped only after dragging the jeep for about 500 metres, said the police.

Detained
A senior police officer told Deccan Herald, “The couple were detained from Ramanagaram while they were trying to flee. They were in a state of shock and claimed that they were going to have breakfast in Ramanagaram.

As they reached Basavanapura, they found a cliff on the other side of the track. They decided to take the vehicle near the cliff to click photographs. The area is not a motorable road, as it is covered with stones and bushes.

The jurisdictional railway police will register a case against the couple, added the officer.
