Speed, liquor claim two lives in city

Last Updated 15 April 2016, 04:00 IST
Speed and liquor claimed two lives, including that of an Army jawan, in two separate road accidents here on Thursday.

In both the cases, the victims were in an inebriated state and driving at high speed, police said.

In the first accident, which happened around 2 am in Mukherjee Nagar, two students of Delhi University’s Ramjas College were returning home after attending a Bihu party on a Yamaha motorcycle.

The students — identified as Prinayan Barua, 20, and Manas Dutta, 20 — hailed from Assam.
While negotiating a sharp turn at D block, Camp Chowk, their bike hit a kerb.

“They were riding at a very high speed. The accident flung their bodies in the air. While Barua who was driving the bike landed with his head hitting the road first, Dutta landed on his hips,” said a police officer.

While Dutta managed to stand up after a few minutes, his friend lay unconscious on the road. A motorist then spotted the duo.

“He stopped his car and informed the police about the accident. An ambulance was rushed and both were taken to the Sushruta Trauma Centre where Barua was declared brought dead,” the police officer said.

According to police, both the students were drunk and were not wearing helmets. “We are investigating the case, and have registered a case under the charges of rash driving, however, the driver is dead so I don’t think much can be done further in the case,” a police officer said.

In the second accident, C H Kiran Singh, 31, a jawan with the Indian Army died when his scooter hit a truck on the Moti Bagh flyover. He hailed from Manipur.

“Singh and his friend Jeetu, also hailing from Manipur, were riding a scooter,” said a police officer.

Singh had come to Delhi few days back with his mother to get her treated in an Army hospital, police said.

A truck carrying sand for the under-construction Metro station site, hit the two-wheeler from behind on the flyover.

While Jeetu, who was riding the pillion, fell on the road, Singh came under the wheels of the truck.

“He died on the spot,” the police officer said, adding that his body was reeking with the smell of liquor when the police reached the accident spot.

The truck driver fled the spot after the accident leaving his truck behind, police said. After the death of two persons from northeast, a senior Delhi Police officer hailing from the northeast part of the country issued an advisory to his community members urging them to refrain from ‘late-night parties’ which often result in ‘drunken driving’ and contribute to road accidents.
