Heavy rain brings mercury level down

Several parts of the state received heavy rain on Saturday bringing relief from the sweltering heat for the residents.

Heavy rain coupled with gusty winds lashed Sakleshpur for more than an hour in the early hours of Saturday. Roofs of several houses were damaged as tree branches fell on them. More than 30 houses were damaged in Kushalanagar. A woman sustained injuries as roof tiles fell on her head.

Hundreds of parrots which had taken shelter in the trees were killed as the tree branches fell on buildings. Electricity poles were uprooted at several places disrupting power supply. The authorities of Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) said that they need at least a day to restore power supply. Traffic on Bisle-Subramanya road came to an halt for more than two hours as a huge tree fell on the road near Kyanahalli.

While Sakleshpur town and adjoining regions received 45 mm rains, Bage, Kyanahalli, Attihalli, Hongadahall and adjoining regions received 70, 45 and 60 mm of rains respectively. Jankere and Arekere villages recorded 55 mm rains. Halebeedu, Alur, Belur, Hassan and other parts of the district received normal rains. The showers brought cheers for farmers and coffee growers. Mudigere taluk in Chikkamagaluru also received rain early in the morning.

Dakshina Kannada
Heavy rain coupled with lightning and thunder lashed parts of Dakshina Kannada district in the wee hours of Saturday. A man was killed when lightning struck him at Shanthinagara in Indabettu in Belthangady taluk. The deceased has been identified as Jagadish Naik (32).  Power supply was affected in several parts of Uppinangady due to
lightning.

Mandya
Standing crops on around 15 acres of land were damaged in the rains which lashed parts of Maddur taluk in Mandya district. The loss is estimated at Rs 18.5 lakh. The ‘gopura’ of Chennakeshava temple in Koppa developed a six-foot crack due to lightning. The 200-year-old temple was given a facelift recently.
