Goolipura incident: Cases registered against 32 persons

Last Updated 19 April 2016, 18:13 IST

Women of Goolipura, who were staging an indefinite protest against police atrocity for the past three days, led by women self-help groups, withdrew their protest on Monday night.

Police had arrested a few men of the village for allegedly attacking the personnel, during a raid at a gambling den, recently. This resulted in the other men fleeing the village, out of fear of more arrests.

Kollegal MLA S Jayanna, accompanied by the officials, visited the spot and held talks with the protesters.

When the women complained that innocent men have been arrested, Jayanna assured that cases had been lodged against 32 persons, who had attacked the police personnel and legal action would be taken against them. The Police department has been directed not to harass innocent persons. Hence, the men, who had left the village out of fear, can return and support their families, he added.

He also appealed to the villagers to cooperate with the police and maintain peace and harmony.

The villagers demanded the suspension of Circle Inspector Shivaswamy, Sub-Inspector Chikkarajashetty and constable Naganayaka. Jayanna said that he would speak to the SP to take necessary action against the erring policemen.

DySP Mahantesh said, “Innocent persons will not be harassed, but the villagers should cooperate to arrest the 32 men, who are said to be the accused.”
