'Learned people' dump waste the savage way

Waste from one locality dumped into another; working couples blamed

Even as the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) is initiating a slew of measures to keep the city clean, unbridled dumping of waste carried from one locality to another, is posing a hurdle. The blame is on working couples and some households.

In a reality check conducted by Deccan Herald, it was found that, a vacant plot near Railway under-bridge (RUB) in Jayanagar, at the intersection of new Kantharaja Urs Road and KR Boulevard is littered with waste every other minute.

People, especially working couples, from neighbouring localities like TK Layout, Kuvempunagar and also Jayanagar carry waste in a plastic cover, either in cars or two-wheelers, and dump it at the plot, en route office.

Corporator and Chairman of MCC Taxation, Finance and Appeals Standing Committee S Balu, bemoaned that it had become the order of the day. “Such is the situation that, no sooner garbage collectors on the MCC roll clear waste at the spot, at least 10 bags of waste will be found dumped again. It has turned into a nuisance,” he said.

“Similar is the situation at 11th Cross, Gokulam, under Ward 31 of the MCC. The corner of the cross road is found littered every morning. Apart from working couples, housemaids are also to be blamed for disposing waste according to their whims and fancies,” says Corporator T Girish Prasad.

In addition to this, huge containers placed at different points remain uncleared with garbage overflowing from them. They carried far and wide by wind and rains, resulting in ‘nature adding to the civic issues’, the corporator said.

The situation is no different at the road adjacent to BCM hostel for women at ‘M’ Block, Kuvempunagar. The road leads to a residential locality. Passing through the hostel, the road users are greeted by waste accompanied by tepid smell.

MCC Environmental Officer Shafinaz told that there are several complaints about learned people dumping waste at locations away from their dwellings. However, the MCC is taking action, whenever such complaints are received.

Recently, there was a complaint about a vegetable vendor dumping waste off the road leading to St Philomena’s Church, one of the prominent tourist spots in the city. He was caught red-handed and the waste dumped by him was re-loaded to his cart. Subsequently, the cart was also seized.

It was a regular spot for the people in the vicinity to dump waste. After consistent measures, like cleaning it and decorating the place with rangolis, the MCC has somehow succeeded in checking littering of waste. However, it has turned into a ‘daily war against waste’.
