Criminal slips away after beating cop to death

A suspected drug peddler beat a constable to death and escaped from inside the high-security Crime Branch headquarters in the heart of Ahmedabad on Thursday.

The drug peddler, Manish Swarn Kumar, apparently hit 40-year-old constable Chandrakant Makwana repeatedly with an iron rod on his head, resulting in Chandrakant’s death.  The scene of crime was Ahmedabad Crime Branch headquarters that has three-tier security comprising state reserve police, the local police and the Crime Branch staff.

Chandrakant’s body lay in a pool of blood in a room on the ground floor of the Anti Organized Crime Cell on Thursday morning. Manish, a resident of Rajasthan, is believed to have been picked up for questioning by the constable to the crime branch a little after midnight of Wednesday.

"At 7 am today, when the officer on duty came in, he saw Chandrakant lying in a pool of blood. An iron rod was also lying there. The suspect had fled," said Crime Branch officer C N Rajpute.

"It is suspected that the assailant drug peddler managed to escape by the back door," he added.
