The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will confer the Kempegowda Award on 150 people this year for their contribution to the city. These awards will be given on Kempegowda Day on Friday.

Releasing the list of the award winners, Mayor B N Manjunath Reddy said these awards are being given in 15 different categories including social service, drama, films, dance, music, literature, education, media, services to Kannada, drawing and painting, cultural field, yoga, sports and medical field. “After much deliberation, we finally brought out the list of 150 prominent figures of the city, who have made a positive impact on our lives,” the Mayor said.

The list includes Dr Manjunath S Gujjar, actor Dingri Nagaraj, director S K Bhagwan, Master K T Darshan and tabla player Vishwanath Nakod. To a question, the Mayor said the list was prepared after taking the JD(S), which is an ally of the Congress in the BBMP, into confidence. “There is no question of the awards having a bearing on our (Congress) alliance with the JD(S),” said the Mayor.

Replying to a query, the Mayor said the BBMP will pay the cash prize of Rs 25,000 through the real time gross settlement (RTGS) mode unlike previous years, when many of the cheques issued were dishonoured. Along with the award to the citizens, the Palike will honour its employees who have been rendering exemplary services to their organisation. It includes revenue officials who helped generate tax worth Rs 2,000 crore.
