On Earth Day, citizen activists-turned-eco-warriors have taken the task of saving Planet Earth through cleanliness drives and innovative campaigns without depending on the government.

Undeterred by the soaring temperature, Sunil Sood, an elderly citizen from Jayanagar 2nd Block is busy putting up posters on 'SwachaGraha' near a dumpyard on an electric panel in his area and getting a caricature of globe done.

For the last two to three days, he has been making efforts to beautify the dumpyard spot at 4th Cross, 9th Main.  Sood said: "Pourakarmikas clean up the place everyday but residents dump mixed waste leading to mosquito and dog menace. I was fed up with this and with the support of residents, I have taken the task of transforming the place. I have put up a replica of ‘Mother Earth’ and will get it painted with messages on it. Hopefully, seeing this, people will stop throwing garbage.”

Kavitha Reddy, along with other volunteers from HSR Layout under the banner ‘Hasiru Mithra’, have started a campaign ‘#KillBills’ wherein posters, banners, bills, flex and stickers are removed across the city to re-claim Bengaluru. They dedicate most of their weekends to this cause.

“We started the campaign in the first week of April wherein we cleared ugly posters from three pillars below the Begur flyover, at Begur road junction on Hosur Road. Our target is to get all of the 270 pillars on the National Highway stretch beautified and reduce the visual pollution. We have opened Google maps wherein interested people can tag the locations where such drives need to be held,” said Reddy. Similarly, Mahendra MG, a SwachaGraha movement volunteer from BTM Layout has cleaned up a black spot at Balajinagar area with the support of other volunteers. He said: “We are a group of 40 members and we meet once in a week to spread the message of cleanliness among public.”

Meanwhile, Sood who has been a resident of Bengaluru for over six months, plans to replicate the installation of a globe and turning the dumpyards into beauty spots across 198 wards.
