Five people, including two women, were killed and over 25 injured in a serial accident involving four vehicles in Bailhongal of Belagavi district on Sunday morning.

According to sources, an ambulance from Jamkhandi, which was ferrying one Kamalavva to a hospital in Belagavi, collided head-on with a truck coming from the opposite direction in front of Parivartan School on Bachi-Raichur state highway at Somanatti village in Bailhongal.  The ambulance driver was overtaking a Tata Ace vehicle carrying 20 people going to participate in a post-funeral function besides residents of Onteroni in Yaragatti. Due to the impact, four people travelling in the ambulance were killed on the spot.

The Tata Ace, which hit the ambulance from the rear, overturned twice and fell into a roadside ditch before coming to halt. Meanwhile, a motorcycle rider who was travelling close by, was also seriously injured but succumbed to injuries at the district hospital.

 The deceased have been identified as Basavva Basappa Guggari (50), Kamalavva Basningappa Guggari (45), Nagesh Rachappa Kolalagi (40) all residents of Kolur village of Bilagi taluk in Bagalkot district and Mahadev Nyamgoudar of Jamkhandi.

All the four were travelling in the ambulance while Mahadev was driving the ambulance belonging to Sharada Hospital at Jamkhandi in Bagalkot. The identity of the fifth person, said to be the motorcycle rider, is yet to be ascertained. Nearly 20 people from Yaragatti in Savadatti taluk who were travelling in the overloaded Tata Ace goods vehicle suffered serious injuries and have been admitted to the district hospital. Nesargi police have registered a case.
