Land sharks target Kundalahalli lake

Last Updated 06 May 2016, 15:30 IST

Land sharks have targeted Kundalahalli Lake in Whitefield and are dumping debris illegally in its periphery. Locals fear that the lake would soon get filled up and encroached upon.

Lakes have been a soft target for land sharks in Bengaluru. They dump debris and then flatten them to build temporary structures. Before you know, the lake is gone.
On April 27, when the Deccan Herald team visited the lake, they were a witness to one such attempt.  A truck came to dump construction debris in the broad daylight. Luckily, BBMP officials were at hand to chase it away.
Residents of the area say though the illegal dumping has been going on for the last few years, it has accelerated recently.  A 70 feet site is being filled with construction waste mostly at nights.
Activist groups Whitefield Rising and United Bangalore have joined hands with BBMP to tackle this threat. BBMP officials plan to deploy guards at night and dig trenches around the lake to put a stop to illegal dumping.
The groups have mobilised Rs 2 crore of CSR funds to develop two sewage treatment plants. They plan to treat the waste water that is let into the lake from the numerous apartments surrounding it.
