Expert favours Ooty for deep sky exploration

'VYUTTHA-2016', annual technical fest begins at VVCE

Abhas Mitra, renowned astrophysicist, on Friday, favoured installation of giant wave telescopes at Ooty in Tamil Nadu, Hanle in Ladakh (Jammu and Kashmir), Pune in Maharashtra and Nainital in Uttarakhand, for deep sky exploration.

In his inaugural address at ‘VYUTTHA - 2016’, annual technical fest of Vidyavardhaka College of Engineering, here, Mitra, who retired from Bhabha Atomic Research Commission (BARC) as a scientist, said, “Mounting of giant wave telescopes in the aforesaid locations are highly favourable.”

In substantiation, Mitra displayed a variety of photographs of giant wave telescopes to arouse the interest of budding engineers.

He explained about their technical specifications, mode of use and astronomical aspects.

Stressing on the importance of technical education and entrepreneurship, Mitra advised the students to concentrate on practical skills and competence. Teachers also have a role in identifying the hidden talent among students, he added.

Students raised posers on many esoteric subjects namely cosmology, celestial mechanics, solar terrestrial physics and astrophysics. The inaugural session was followed by ‘ViVaCiousE – 2016’, an annual project exhibition and competition, including start-ups. Numerous projects of different departments were on display. Juries drawn from various academic institutions and industries will choose the best among them.

Today’s event

Rohan M Ganapathy, director and chief executive officer, Bellatrix Aerospace Systems, will deliver a talk on current technical education system and benefits of entrepreneurship, on Saturday.

A science expo and idea presentations will be held on Saturday and Sunday.
