Posters, bills mar Mysuru's clean city image

At a time when hundreds of Mysureans are striving to retain the ‘Cleanest City’ tag, a few people are defacing the beauty of the City by pasting posters, bills and banners on walls, electricity polls and other places, to promote their individual business.

Movie posters, bills of private education institutions and others can be seen at vantage places. One can see movie posters on walls on Hunsur Road, near Premier Studio and other places. Similarly, electricity poles, bus stops and trees are filled with handbills.

Though the authorities remove them and paint walls to maintain the beauty, posters reappear within a day or two. Walls at Ramaswamy Circle were cleared of posters and were painted only a week ago. But, within a day or two, posters reappeared.

D P Uday Kumar, who is involved in the cleaning campaign, says, Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) must levy heavy penality on those who deface the city. “Many people like me work hard without any expectations, just to protect the beauty of the city and to retain the ‘Cleanest city’ tag, but, some people are making it ugly,” he said.

An employee of a private firm, who was pasting a poster on a tree near Scouts and Guides grounds, here, said, he wants to popularise his company products and was thus pasting posters in public places. “None have questioned me pasting the bills,” he said. He earns Rs 10 if he pastes 100 bills of the company.

MCC Health Officer Dr H Ramachandra told Deccan Herald, though sticking banners and posters are banned, many violate the rules. “Whenever it comes to our notice, we remove them,” he said.

The MCC has formed three teams – Abhaya – to check and peel posters, bills and banners. Three days ago, the teams removed many posters that were put up on walls and other places, he said. Respective zonal assistant commissioners and environmental engineers are asked to create awareness against the menace, the official added.
