Asiatic lion suffering from  liver, kidney ailments at zoo

An Asiatic lion, Shankar, aged eight years and two months, at Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, Mysuru, is suffering from liver and kidney ailments.

The male lion, which was received from Sakkarbaugh Zoo, Junagadh, on March 3, 2011, is not taking food and is dull since April 30.

According to Zoo Director S Venkatesan, the problem in liver and kidney was detected in a blood test. The treatment is being carried out under the guidance of expert veterinarians, but, the animal is not showing any improvement. The Zoo authorities have roped in experts from Hyderabad Zoo Lion Safari, Shivamogga Lion Safari and professionals from Veterinary College, Hassan.

Precautionary measures

Following the outbreak of bird flu in Bidar district, Mysuru Zoo has taken precautionary measures to ensure the safety of its animals and birds.

The Zoo authorities have kept ‘Foot Dips’ at the visitor’s entrance, vehicle entry gates and at all animal enclosures. As a prophylactic measures, all birds in the zoo have been given medication and fecal samples are being collected for tests. The Zoo has also stopped procuring live fowl and eggs from the retail market.
