BJP memo to Guv wants 150 taluks declared drought-hit

While the government has declared 136 taluks as drought-hit, the BJP believes the numbers to be much higher. The party, which carried out tours in drought hit districts, feels that 150 taluks should be declared as drought-stricken.

State BJP President B S Yeddyurappa on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to Governor Vajubhai Vala in which he has demanded that the special packages, which have been announced to 23 drought affected taluks, should be extended to all 150 taluks. He and other leaders have travelled the state during the last 25 days, he said.

Seeking the governor’s intervention, the party has asked him to shake the government up from its “deep slumber” and make it more “dynamic and pro-active”. The BJP has attacked the Congress government and chief minister Siddaramaiah for indulging in petty politics, and also for its “apathy, callousness and insensitivity” towards the drought conditions.

It has charged that the government has spent only 1/4th of the amount released to it by the Centre as drought relief. Of Rs 2,575 crore assistance released to Karnataka, BJP has said that the government has spent “only about Rs 500 crore”. It has sought effective implementation of NREGA, desilting of lakes, waiver of farm loans to farmers; distribution of free seeds and fertilizers, additional water tankers, establishment of more fodder centres and three-phase power supply for 8 hours.

It has also sought the government to run fodder-special trains to bring fodder from North Indian states such as Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. The government has set up only 7 goshalas, while the requirement was 32 centers.
