Govt to set up Balekundri study chair at VTU

The Karnataka government has decided to establish a study chair in the name of irrigation expert S G Balekundri at Visvesvaraya Technological University. It has also decided to instal Balekundri’s statue at the Malaprabha reservoir, said Water Resources Minister M B Patil on Wednesday.

Patil was speaking after presenting the S G Balekundri Awards to 29 engineers in the department, for the years 2010 to 2015, in Bengaluru. He said that following the request made by Balekundri’s wife, Professor Kamala Balekundri, a decision was made to establish the study chair and the statue.

Patil said that Balekundri’s contribution to the irrigation sector in the state was immense. He left his mark on several projects, including the ones in the Cauvery and Krishna river basins. Patil also attributed the establishment of an effective electricity network in the state to Balekundri.

The engineers were presented with the awards in recognition of their work.
