Three killed in lightning, houses damaged

Pre-monsoon showers have been reported for the last couple of days at a few districts in the state. Three persons, two oxen and a few sheep were struck dead by lightning.

Pre-monsoon showers lashed Belagavi city, the surrounding areas and other parts of the district for more than an hour for the second consecutive day on Friday.

Belagavi city, surrounding villages in Belagavi taluk, Bailhongal town, Kittur M K Hubli and Nesargi in Bailhongal taluk and parts of Khanapur received rains in the evening.

Cloudy environs prevailed throughout the day. A couple of trees uprooted in the gusty winds in Bailhongal town. A library and a few shops suffered damages.

Even though the sky was overcase since afternoon, heavy winds blews proved deterrent. The twin cities received rainfall for a few minutes towards evening.

25-year-old Bhimappa Dyamanna Morabad was struck by lightning while he was working in the fields at Kuradikeri village in Hubballi taluk on Friday. Two oxen were also killed. Dark clouds covered the skies and gusty winds were experienced in Hubballi-Dharwad. Dharwad received heavy rainfall, while it was only a drizzle in Hubballi.

At least 18 sheep were struck by lightning at Deggaon village in Bailhongal taluk, Belagavi district on Friday evening.

Shepherd Yallappa Pujar from Gokak had been grazing his sheep when heavy showers along with thunders lashed. He has suffered about Rs 1.50 lakh loss.

Nargund in Gadag district also witnessed light rainfall.
Kalasa town in Chikkamagaluru district has been receiving heavy rainfall, accompanied with thunder and lightning for the last three days. Roof tiles of a few houses and electrical equipment suffered damages due to lightning.

Shivamogga district received moderate rainfall on Friday evening. Shivamogga City, Shikaripur, Sagar, Bhadravathi and Hosanagar taluks received rainfall for some time.

It is drizzled for some time in Ranebennur taluk and the surroundings regions in Haveri taluk on Friday evening. Haveri, Shiggaon, Savanur, Byadgi, Hangal, Hirekerur taluks received rainfall. The taluks also received rainfall accompanied with thunder and lightning late on Thursday night.

Chandrakant Muddadagi (60) and his son Siddharoodha Muddadagi (19) were struck by lightening at Jawalga (B) village in Aland taluk, Kalaburagi district on Friday. A pair of bullocks tied in a cattle shed have also been killed in lightening.

The tragedy struck when both of them were taking shelter in a cattleshed in their farm field on the outskirts of the village.
