Indomitable spirit

Her determination is second to none. Be it resuming her life after losing her child to miscarriage, or moving on after losing her limbs to a rare bacterial  infection, Shalini Saraswathi has defied all odds through out her life.

And on a warm Sunday morning, the quadruple amputee was once again seen setting new standards as she completed the Open 10K run here. Shalini completed the race in 2:00.02 seconds, a timing she will cherish for a long time to come.

Though the 37-year-old, running alongside her husband Prashanth and coach BP Aiyappa, had to face some difficulties during the course of the race, nothing seemed to affect her will to complete the 10 kilometre distance.

“She did have some trouble running such a long distance with the blades, but nothing serious,” said her husband. “It’s just the sweat that would cause her some trouble. So we had to stop twice during the course of the race -- first at the six kilometre mark and then just before we approached the end -- to readjust the prosthetics and then continue with the run,” he added.

Meanwhile her coach Aiyappa seemed happy with his trainee’s performance. “We never set a said timing for Shalini. I wanted her to complete the race and moreover enjoy it,” he said.
