Carpets to adorn Abu Dhabi's new residences

Last Updated 19 May 2016, 18:37 IST

The concept for a complex of intricately woven towers, with the podium resembling a handcrafted carpet, is expected to become a reality in the UAE. Al Qudra Real Estate, the real estate arm of Al Qudra Holding, is planning to launch a 5-tower residential project – dubbed the Al Sadu Towers – across a 17,530 sq metre site on Al Reem island in Abu Dhabi. Upon completion, the towers will offer around 1,300 residential units.

The concept design was inspired by one of the oldest traditional forms of weaving practised by Emariti women in rural communities, listed by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. An official from the Abu Dhabi-based architecture firm Avant Garde said that “the intricate design will look as if the tower is sitting on a handcrafted carpet.”

A company brochure further explained the concept thus: “The vertical lines interlocking with horizontal lines envelop the five towers, replicating the Sadu movement and the various stages of carpet making. The Sadu meshwork wraps itself around the entire structure of the towers and podium, presenting a sophisticated veil.”

Although no official launch date has been announced, it is likely to be before the end of 2016. There has also been no information regarding the  project’s cost and tender timeline have also been given.
