A woman, who was seen beating her 85-year-old mother in a video that went viral, on Tuesday apologised to her and “begged” for forgiveness.

The daughter, along with her four sisters and a brother, appeared before the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) on Tuesday afternoon in response to summons issued to them.

The daughter fell to the feet of the mother Gurcharan Kaur, cried profusely and begged for her forgiveness, according to DCW officials.

On May 23, a video, in which the 60-year-old daughter was seen beating and slapping her mother at her home in Kalkaji, had surfaced on the internet. The DCW had taken cognisance of it and issued notices to the family.

The woman has now given a written apology to the commission and promised that she will never repeat the offence again. A case has already been registered against her at Kalkaji police station after the commission wrote to Delhi Police.

During the visit by the DCW to the woman’s home after the incident, it was found that she was living alone in a small room in the house, without any support from her family, which includes five daughters, and a son in London.

Gurcharan Kaur told the DCW team that she was beaten up by her daughter a month back as well. However, she had refused to get any case registered against her daughter.

Now, the woman’s son has given in writing to the commission that he will take the sole responsibility of ensuring the protection and welfare of his mother.

He has informed the commission that he is in the process of preparing documents for a passport and visa for his mother as he wants to take her to London with him, an official said.

It was also agreed that if the daughter who had beaten her up meets the old woman, it would be done under the strict supervision of her son. Also, Gurcharan Kaur’s property will remain in her name and her pension will now come to her account directly.

The commission told the family members that it will maintain a vigil and ensure action against them in case there were any lapses in her welfare.
