PU paper leak: no bail for minister's ex-OSD Obalaraju

The Sessions Court (Special Court) on Thursday rejected the bail petition filed by Obalaraju, one of the suspects in the PUC Chemistry question paper leak scam.

The former Officer on Special Duty to minister Sharanprakash Patil, Obalaraju moved the court for bail after the High Court stayed the ongoing investigation against him under the Karnataka Control of Organised Crime Act (KCOCA) by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

The High Court had stayed for eight weeks the CID proceedings under KCOCA against Obalaraju and K S Ranganath, an engineer working in PWD.

The CID advocates filed the objections and opposed granting of bail given the gravity of the case. They told the court that public faith was shaken due to the scam. They pointed out there was no bar on continuing the investigation under Section 3 of KCOCA. They stated that the suspects were powerful and might intimidate witnesses. The court considered the advocates’ plea and rejected Obalaraju’s bail petition, the police said.

The CID submitted a requisition before the First Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Bengaluru, on April 20 to invoke the KCOCA against those involved in the scam.  The Malleswaram police had registered a case under various sections of the IPC and the Karnataka Education Act, 1983, based on a complaint filed by Director of the Pre-University Department on March 22.
