Helpline for victims of ragging

Last Updated 31 May 2009, 16:05 IST

Sir, The UGC has done a good job of teaching a lesson to those who indulge in ragging by the inauguration of helplines for the victims. It has treated the offene as a severe criminal act on par with rape and stipulates that the guilty can be expelled from the institution and further debarred in certain cases for taking admission to any institution elsewhere in the country.
The said helplines for ragging complaints will work round the clock and the victims of ragging or parents can dial a free helpline, which will be announced shortly to register complaints, and accordingly the helpline will have a software incorporated in it which will pass on the message and can rescue the affected student and action deemed fit will be taken by the college management.
The university grants commission, which is the brain behind in introducing this innovative method of teaching a lesson on those who are accused of harrassing the juniors will help the victim in a great way.

Incompetent examiners

Sir, Approps the news items ‘Bungling by examiners’ (DH May 29 and May31), any blunder committed in any field could be disastrous. A reckless driver, a careless surgeon or a callous engineer all could make or mar anything who is liable for prosecution under law but not an examiner who should be more vigilant and prudent in evaluating answer scripts as this decides the fate of the students and the nation.
The irresponsible attitude of the examiner could cause mental agony to the students and their parents. There had been occasions where some sensitive students committed suicide for having wrongly declared as failed but on revaluation they were found to be meritorious. Such students otherwise found to possess good grades on revaluation should be suitably compensated and the examiners debarred.

Women’s Bill this session

Sir, The country will remain grateful to UPA if Meira Kumar the daughter of Jagjivan Ram is unanimously elected as the first woman Speaker of the 15th Lok Sabha — ‘Now, Madam Speaker for LS’ (DH  May 31). Merit should be the first criteria for any post whether it’s Speaker or any other responsible post; moreover the duties of a speaker in Indian parliament are onerous.

Naturally people wonder that whether Meira Kumar to handle those rogue parlimentarian whose main duty to rush the den of the house with iron hand? This bold step of the progressive thinking Congress will be successful on the  day when the historic 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament will be adopted. The Nation has faith that this coming session Women’s Reservation Bill will be tabled in the Parliament.

Abhoring racism

Sir, Approps ‘Racial attacks: Indian students take out rally in Oz’ (DH May 31), Indian students community on a spree of ‘protests’ and rallying voices against their attacks by Aussies shows that Australia is also beset with the feelings of racism.
What one needs to fathom is whether racism is the cause or sheer attempted murder for ‘gain’. However, similar incidents in the recent past and a spate are a pointer to the ‘unhealthy’ trend which is being nurtured. The Australian govt must act vehemently with a firm hand and take ‘punitive’ action. This will serve as an ‘eye-opener’ to others.

Tribute to Kamala Das

Sir, It is hard to believe that Kamala Das is no more — ‘Kamala Das passes away’ (DH, May 31). Das was a prolific writer in Malayalam and English, winning many national and international awards. Hailing from an orthodox Hindu Nair family, she had courage of conviction to air unorthodox views on many issues. Little wonder that she was embroiled in many controversies. It seemed that she loved to court controversies. As long as she wrote, she was in the limelight, never at peace.
