Lotus as a metaphor of life

Lotus as a metaphor of life

Art exhibition

Coming back to her passion for painting after 10 years of marriage, Sunayana Malhotra felt it was a natural decision owing to the “restlessness” that she felt. “There was so much that I wanted to express and there was a constant restlessness that I felt. That made me want to paint again,” exclaims Malhotra, who had her first exhibition comprising 25 works in 2007.

In her latest solo art exhibition titled ‘Aham’ 16’, the works are women-centric and through her canvases, she tries to express the various stages in a woman’s life. “Aham or I, me and myself naturally flows out of my works as a release of my pent up emotions. I am inspired when it comes to working on the female form,” she tells Metrolife.

She adds, “For me drawing the female form comes naturally. It is a way to express my thoughts or reflect on them. The female form is not glorified or portrayed to please any male voyeuristic attitude or as the media portrays it. It is of a real woman whose body tells of her journey from puberty onwards.”

“From puberty to motherhood and from her breast feeding days to finally menopause, a woman undergoes many changes both physically and emotionally. At times, she looks at herself with disgust at the changes she undergoes, and at times, she is gracefully accepting it as part of ageing. This balancing is what I have tried to depict,” says the Delhi-based artist.
On using lotus as a metaphor for women, she says, “Lotuses have always been a way of expressing femininity. In this work, I have replaced the female form with lotus. It has an equally effeminate feeling and portrays the different layers of a woman as a daughter, mother, lover or a wife.”

She then emphasises on the need to encourage children towards art. “I want that people should appreciate art and make the effort to take children to exhibitions so that they grow up with exposure to this powerful stage,” she says.
‘Aham’ is on display at Visual Arts Gallery, India Habitat Centre till July 7.
