CID to probe illegal removal of uterus by govt doctor

Last Updated 04 July 2016, 19:26 IST

The government has directed the CID to probe the incident of illegal removal of uterus by government doctor Dayanand at Birur in Chikkamagaluru district.  The government has also suspended the doctor.

The action comes after more than one and half years after the incident came to light. “Though a committee headed by Dr Sudha of Hassan Medical College had confirmed in 2015 that surgeries were conducted unnecessarily, no action was taken against the doctor till recently,” Health Minister K R Ramesh Kumar told the Council on Monday.

Dr Dayanand had reportedly conducted over 1,400 such surgeries by misleading gullible women. The Health Commissioner has been recently directed to file an FIR against the doctor so that the CID can take up the investigation. “I admit that there is delay in taking action. But there is no question of sparing anybody,” he said.

He also said he will explore the possibility of enacting a separate legislation to prevent such incidents.

The Minister was replying to Congress member Jayamala.

Replying to BJP’s Kota Srinivas Poojari on the poor state of government hospitals, Kumar said the situation will improve when ministers, elected representatives and IAS officers start taking treatment at government hospitals. Now, only the poor go to government hospitals and so, it is neglected.

He explained how employees at government hospitals indulge in corruption and fleece poor patients. The hospital staff pilfer medicines meant for patients. Equipment at dialysis centres are damaged, to help nearby private hospitals.
