President's Estate gets 33 notices for mosquito breeding

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has issued 33 notices to the sprawling President’s Estate after the council found heavy breeding in several spots on its premises.

The notices were issued over the last two weeks.  The notices were issued for breeding around the staff quarters. The inspection team checked for overhead uncovered water tanks and rusted items discarded near the quarters.

“The notices were issued to staff quarters in the President’s Estate for both mosquitogenic conditions and mosquito breeding. The team looked for rusted items abandoned in different pockets. These are potential sites for mosquito breeding. The checks were conducted on three days – June 24, 26 and 28,” said an NDMC official.

“The notices have been issued to the different departments which should now take necessary action to redress the situation,” said the official. Of the three dengue cases reported in the first two days in July, one case has been reported from the NDMC area.

Last year too, the council had issued several notices to the President’s Estate after heavy mosquito breeding was found. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences has been issued three challans and 14 notices after heavy breeding was found on the campus.

Meanwhile, doctors said there was water stagnation around the girls’ hostel. “This has been communicated to the administration several times. However, no action has been taken so far. The condition has worsened after the rain on Sunday night and can lead to an outbreak of diseases like malaria and dengue due to mosquito breeding,” said a member of the AIIMS Resident Doctors’ Association.

According to an NDMC inspector, `mosquitogenic conditions’ were found in the hospital basement as well. The council has also sent notices to Lady Irwin College, Akbar Bhawan, PSOI club, Nirman Bhawan, The Railway Club, National gallery of Modern Art, Triveni Kala Sangam, Taj Mansingh Hotel recently.

Earlier, the NDMC had issued notices to New Maharashtra Sadan, Shivaji Stadium, Delhi High Court and Baroda House.  The council has issued 1,512 notices so far this season.
