Experts want separate budget for agriculture

In a discussion organised by the IFFCO Foundation on “Implications of Union Budget 2010 on Agriculture, Cooperatives& Rural development,”  the experts said that to increase the food production and make agriculture more viable to its dependents, the government should think of a separate budget.

Urging the government to improve rural infrastructure, former Union Agriculture Secretary J N L Srivastava said that growth in agriculture not only depended on credit availability or fertilizer but other factors like better roads, power supply and water were also equally important.

Welcoming the nutrient-based subsidy policy, IFFCO Foundation Trustee and former MP D Yadav said the subsidy must directly reach farmers. The government should take steps to increase farm sector’s contribution to the GDP from the current 15 per ccent, said another expert Ajay Jakhar, Chairman, Bharat Krishak Samaj.
