Chaat time

In the comfort lane

It’s a delight to be able to find varied yet delectable ‘chaat’ options under one roof. Offering this and more to munch on, is the ‘Calcutta Victoria Chat House’, Banaswadi, which has been around for 15 years.

Boasting of old and loyal customers, this eatery has stood the test of time, despite its humble presence. From snack items like ‘Samosa’, ‘Jhal muri’, ‘Tikki’ and ‘Veg cutlet’ to authentic ‘chaats’ in ‘chola’ and ‘dahi’ categories, the eatery has much to offer to its customers. In the ‘chola’ section there are the ‘Chola mix chaat’, ‘Kachori chaat’ and the ‘Tikki chaat’, which are sumptuous and filling. The ‘dahi’ chaats (which might not be right for the season) like ‘Dahi Tikki’ and ‘Dahi papadi’ are creamy and close to the authentic tastes.

Though the place has a limited seating capacity of 16 people, the customers often throng around the ‘chaat’ shop to enjoy their favourite items. “One can often see couples standing around, ordering one plate after the other, while families prefer to sit inside,” says Mahesh Kumar Gupta, manager.

He says that the most demanded items on the list include ‘chaats’, ‘paratha’, ‘kullad lassi’, ‘manchurian’ and ‘pav bhaji’. “We started off with just ‘chaats’ and slowly expanded the menu, as people started asking for more options. While people mostly come for ‘chaat’, others would ask if options like rolls and ‘manchurian’ were available. Thus we decided to try them too,” he says.

Mahesh adds that there are people who just come to enjoy the ‘kullad chai’. “There are others items, like the ‘samosa’, which is a hit among the North-Indian food lovers and people from the other end of the city come for it too,” details Mahesh.

The customer base includes youngsters and families. “We have people who have been coming for years. We also see customers who have shifted out of the city, come back for a bite at the place when they are in Bengaluru. It’s like a nostalgic ride for them,” he says. Endearing moments like these make him and the staff realise how the eatery has been a part of people’s life.

“Online ordering has helped improve our customer cycle as they don’t need to come here, to enjoy our items. We have regulars on ‘Foodpanda’ and ‘Swiggy’, and this has helped increase our presence,” adds Mahesh. He says that they also have some customers who ask for home delivery and the eatery readily obliges. “If the distance isn’t much, we happily do this.” The eatery is open to customisation as they believe that each person’s taste buds vary. “Since it is a live counter, it doesn’t take much to add a little sweet chutney or a more salt to a ‘chaat’. If what they want is available, we happily add it,” adds Mahesh. This eatery is located at No 148, Kasturingar, 2nd Main Road, Banaswadi.
